Industrial vs Haute Couture Pleating: What's the Difference?

26 février 2026 7 min read· By Slim Plissage

TL;DR

Industrial pleating is high-volume, machine-intensive, and optimized for synthetic fabrics. Haute couture pleating is artisanal, bespoke, and handles delicate natural fibers. Slim Plissage is one of the rare ateliers operating confidently in both worlds.

Industrial pleating

Industrial plissage serves ready-to-wear brands, uniform manufacturers, and technical textile clients. It relies on high-speed machine folding, polyester fabrics (for permanent pleats), and large batch orders. Quality is excellent but standardized.

Haute couture pleating

Haute couture plissage is artisanal. Each piece is handled carefully, often with hand-folding into bespoke molds. Fabrics are delicate — silk, chiffon, organza. Volumes are small. Quality must be flawless. Turnaround can be longer.

Where they meet

The best ateliers handle both — using industrial capacity for volume work and reserving skilled artisans for couture orders. This hybrid model is increasingly rare, as most workshops specialize narrowly.
