TL;DR

Polyester pleats permanently; silk and natural fibers pleat beautifully but may need re-pressing. Chiffon and organza are ideal for crystal and sunburst pleats. Wool and heavier fabrics are best for knife and box pleats.

Polyester — the workhorse of permanent pleating

Polyester holds pleats permanently thanks to heat-setting. It is the dominant fabric in industrial and ready-to-wear pleating. Handles every technique beautifully.

Silk — the haute couture standard

Silk (charmeuse, satin, chiffon) gives pleats exquisite drape and sheen. Pleats may need re-pressing after wear, but the result is unmatched in luxury. Ideal for accordion, sunburst, crystal, and fluted.

Chiffon and organza

These sheer fabrics are perfect for fine crystal pleats and dramatic sunburst effects. They require careful handling and lower-temperature setting.

Cotton and linen

Natural fibers pleat well but don't hold pleats permanently. Great for summer fashion and plissé finishes. Knife and box pleats are traditional choices.

Wool and heavier fabrics

Wool, tweed, and heavy cotton are ideal for knife pleats (kilts, uniforms) and box pleats (tailored skirts, jackets). They resist fine micro-pleats.

Velvet and taffeta

Velvet and taffeta are wonderful for fluted and organ pleats — their structure and surface texture create dramatic light play.

Technical and specialty textiles

Slim Plissage also works with technical textiles for industrial applications — filters, specialty panels, and custom substrates.
