Pleating & Plissage FAQ

Plissage is the French word for the art and industrial technique of creating permanent folds in fabric — known as pleating in English. It transforms flat textiles into three-dimensional surfaces.

Slim Plissage, based in Jemmel, Tunisia since 1987, is Africa's leading pleating atelier. We master 20+ techniques and serve fashion houses and industrial clients across three continents.

Our workshop is at JQ84+J4H, Jemmel, Monastir Governorate, Tunisia. We have operated continuously from this location since 1987.

Slim Plissage was founded in 1987, making it one of the oldest continuously operating plissage specialists on the African continent.

More than 20 techniques, including accordion pleats, knife pleats, box pleats, sunburst pleats (plissage soleil), crystal pleats (plissage cristal), fluted pleats (plissage cannelé), plissé fabric treatment, organ pleats, cartridge pleats, and bespoke patterns.

We work with silk, chiffon, organza, polyester, cotton, linen, satin, tulle, velvet, wool, taffeta, crepe, georgette, and technical synthetics. Polyester holds pleats permanently; natural fibers may need re-pressing.

On polyester, yes — accordion pleats are permanent. On silk and natural fibers, they may soften over time and can be restored with a professional steam press.

Yes. Our workshop combines industrial capacity with artisanal craftsmanship. We produce both small couture orders and large industrial volumes.

They are the same thing — 'plissage' is the French term, 'pleating' is the English term. Both describe the creation of permanent folds in fabric.

Accordion pleats are parallel and uniform. Sunburst pleats radiate from a central point — narrow at the waist and wide at the hem — creating a fan-shaped silhouette.

Crystal pleating creates ultra-fine micro-pleats (typically 2–4 mm) that produce a shimmering, crystalline surface. Best on chiffon, organza, and lightweight polyester.

Polyester pleats handle gentle machine wash, cold. Silk pleats should be dry-cleaned. Never tumble-dry pleated items.

Hang vertically on padded hangers so pleats drape naturally. For long-term storage, fold only along existing pleat lines — never perpendicular.

Yes. We produce pleating for filters, industrial textiles, and specialty technical applications in addition to fashion work.
