Step 1 — Consultation
Every project starts with a conversation. The client shares their vision, fabric type, desired technique, quantity, and timeline. The atelier recommends the most appropriate approach.
Step 2 — Mold preparation
Professional plissage uses precision cardboard molds. For standard patterns, existing molds are selected. For bespoke patterns, a new mold is crafted by hand — this craft skill is one of the hardest to replicate.
Step 3 — Fabric preparation
The fabric is cut to size (for sunburst pleats, cut in a full or partial circle), inspected for defects, and sometimes underlined with a lightweight backing for stability.
Step 4 — Folding
The fabric is carefully fed into the mold and folded — manually for haute couture volumes, by machine for industrial orders. Tension must be perfectly uniform to avoid distortion.
Step 5 — Steam setting
Industrial steam presses set the pleats permanently. Temperature, pressure, and duration are calibrated to the fabric — too hot ruins silk, too cool fails to fix polyester.
Step 6 — Quality inspection
Every piece is hand-inspected for fold uniformity, sharpness, and defects. Pieces that don't meet standards are re-pressed or rejected.
Step 7 — Packaging and shipping
Pleated fabric is packaged with care — folded along the pleat lines, never perpendicular — to protect the folds during transit. Slim Plissage ships worldwide from our Jemmel workshop.
