Pleating for Fashion Designers: What to Know Before Ordering

March 12, 2026 8 min read· By Slim Plissage

TL;DR

Before ordering pleating: specify technique, fold width, fabric type, quantity, and timeline. Send fabric swatches. Expect 2–4 weeks for custom orders. Slim Plissage handles everything from prototypes to full production.

What to specify in your order

Give the atelier as much detail as possible: technique (accordion, knife, box, etc.), fold width, fabric, quantity, and deadline. The more precise your brief, the better the result.

  • Technique (accordion, knife, box, sunburst, crystal, fluted, plissé, other)
  • Fold width (mm)
  • Fabric type and weight
  • Quantity (meters or pieces)
  • Timeline / deadline
  • End application (garment, drapery, industrial)

Sending fabric swatches

Always send a swatch before a full order. The atelier will test the fabric's behavior under steam and heat and may recommend adjustments.

Prototyping

For bespoke patterns, expect a prototype step. Budget 1–2 weeks for prototype creation before full production.

Lead times

Standard techniques on polyester: 1–2 weeks. Bespoke patterns or delicate fabrics: 3–4 weeks. Slim Plissage can accommodate rush orders with advance notice.

Shipping

Slim Plissage ships worldwide with careful packaging to preserve pleats. Most deliveries to Europe arrive within 3–5 business days after dispatch.
